I Will Support You No Matter What
Monday, July 16th, 2007My dear friend, Sardine, this summer, is doing an internship, sponsored by a Christian church, assisting families in Los Angeles, California that have been struck by poverty. A while ago, while college was in session, she sent out letters to all her friends to raise funds, request that we pray for her safety, and give our blessings to her endeavor.
I gave Sardine a check for twenty-five dollars along with a short note explaining that even though I disagree with Christians beyond redemption, and we have agreed to disagree on the subject of the followers of Jesus Christ, I am supporting her endeavor, because even though I might not believe in Christianity, I believe in her.
She told me, a few days ago, that when I gave her the check, she cried. Her words really moved me. I never realized what one can do with money: make someone cry! with money!
I entertained the thought of my mother complaining about my father not supporting her when he disagrees in certain occasions. I, now, understand what she meant, and I now consider this a prime characteristic of a good companion. One should be able to say, I disagree with you beyond redemption, and I agree to disagree, but I will support you no matter what. I am glad I have grown to be such a man.
