Πριν από κάποιες ώρες, ψάχνοντας για το όνομα κάποιου, ανακάλυψα τυχαία την ύπαρξη του αρχείου
http://www.ellak.gr/pub/opendir-2006-10-24-02-31.sql στο website σας το οποίο φαίνεται να περιέχει το dump μιας Postgres βάσης δεδομένων που περιέχει τα προσωπικά στοιχεία (τηλέφωνα, email) 1234
ατόμων–μεταξύ αυτών και εμού.

Επιπλέον, περιλαμβάνονται και τα hashed passwords όλων των καλών ανθρώπων που είχαν την αφέλεια να χρησιμοποιήσουν το ellak.gr.

Μερικές ώρες αργότερα, το αρχείο αυτό εξαφανίστηκε από το http://www.ellak.gr/pub/, δείκτης του ότι αντιληφθήκατε το σφάλμα σας και προσπαθήσατε να το καλύψετε–και όχι να το διορθώσετε.

Θεωρώ αναπόφευκτη αναγκαιότητα και αυτονόητη υποχρέωση σας να ενημερώσετε εμένα και κάθε άλλον ενδιαφερόμενο ότι τα όποια προσωπικά μου στοιχεία είχα την αφέλεια (όπως αποδεικνύεται πλέον) να σας κοινοποιήσω πιθανώς να έχουν κοινοποιηθεί σε μη εξουσιοδοτημένους
τρίτους και να έχουν πέσει σε “λάθος” χέρια. Τέτοιου είδους “νέα” είναι κρίμα να αποσιωπούνται από ένα site του οποίο η πρώτη σελίδα παρέχει νέα.

Επίσης, είναι τραγικό λάθος η απλή αφαίρεση του εν λόγω αρχείου. Αν και δεν μπορώ να γνωρίζω εάν κάνατε την σχετική αίτηση στο Google και σε άλλες μηχανές αναζήτησης, όμως γνωρίζω πως θα ήταν καλύτερο να αντικαταστήσετε το εν λόγω αρχείο με ένα κενό αρχείο ώστε να ενημερωθεί γρηγορότερα και το cache του Google. Επίσης γνωρίζω πως το hashed password μου βρίσκετε στο έλεος του κάθε ενός που μπορεί να χρησιμοποιήσει το cache της Google (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:1i7zzUEnXTkJ:www.ellak.gr/pub/opendir-2006-10-24-02-31.sqlt=clnk&cd=2).

Ακόμα τραγικότερο είναι ότι το αρχείο αυτό βρισκόταν εκεί από τις 15 Δεκεμβρίου. Πιθανολογώ ότι υπάρχουν κάπου στο pub (hint: το pub βγαίνει από το public, ήτοι δημοσιευμένα αρχεία, όχι ήρθα από την pub και τα αρχεία μου τα βάζω στο pub) και άλλα αρχεία που περιέχουν ευαίσθητα δεδομένα.

Παρακαλώ να με κρατήσετε ενήμερο για τα του εν λόγω θέματος.

Μετά από εύλογο χρονικό διάστημα θα δημοσιεύσω τις λεπτομέρειες της εν λόγω κατάστασης στο blog μου–πιστεύω ότι θα είναι χρήσιμο για τις επόμενες γενιές εκπαιδευμένων web administrators…

The distinction between “change” and “innovation” is a hard line to draw and Chuck Vest’s quote was right on target. I truly believe that if more people were dedicated to innovation (therefore reducing their adherence to past practices that lack rationale) the world would be a better place.

Consider the agencies present 24/7 at any federalized international airport: FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), DHS (Department of Homeland Security), TSA (Transportation Security Administration), Federal Air Marshal Service, JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force), ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) and the airport police.

Have there been problems? Generally, no: pre-flight scrutiny is done through the JTTF, people flying out are scrutinized by the TSA, the bad people get arrested by the FBI, if anything goes wrong while in the air, the Air Marshals take care of it, and people coming in are examined by the ICE. All under the common direction of the DHS. In fact, the only recent problem has been when a delay was caused by FBI and DHS fighting over who had jurisdiction. The protocol over “acts of air piracy” is a constant source of bickering between the two agencies and have been the subject of at least one DHS Inspector General’s Report. If the FBI was under the DHS’ control everything would be set in stone by some sort of “internal” hierarchy”.

That is why the DHS was created after the 9/11 fiasco. Useful intelligence was lost because all the law-enforcement agencies used different protocols, different ways to describe things, and there was no intra-agency communication. The DHS was created to be a one-stop for coordinating “homeland security” efforts. In fact, the new DHS regime, better implements the ideal bureaucracy as described by Weber. Instead of having agencies without any official relation to one another, all major agencies being headed by one single entity establishes authority and accountability, while it simplifies reporting relationships and clarifies global priorities. That DHS’ FEMA failed to respond to the Katrina emergency has little to do with its placement under the DHS.

First-responders co-ordinate using DHS protocols. That the new FEMA, the State government, and other parties involved were not well acquainted to the new hierarchy tells us very little about the hierarchy itself. These observations should only serve as a way to criticize the transition, not the new system.

And here’s the kicker: while the Mini starts up, I get into the “select startup disk mode” using the old keyboard—I’m able to navigate between the choices with the old keyboard. If I switch the the new keyboard, nothing works.

For some obscure to me reason, MacMini1,1 doesn’t recognize the Aluminum Apple Keyboard while it’s starting up.

Apple has been notified of the bug and from what I can tell, they’re already aware of the bug. The details of the Mac Mini are (Model Identifier: Macmini1,1; Boot ROM Version: MM11.0055.B08; SMC Version: 1.3f4).

Then, I realize that I only own credit cards and magnets tend to destroy them.

I really want someone to fabricate a study and claim that magnets do not destroy credit cards, and then people would try it, and the economy would fail. Maybe magnets actually don’t destroy credit cards! Who knows…

The two cats, Simone and Pasha, according to intelligence have been conspiring for days to murder the victim. Today, early in the morning, they sneaked into my sleeping quarters and captured the unsuspecting Francesca. Then, they dragged her to their lair where, according to the post-mortem examination, assassinated her with a single blow to the lateral cervical region. This resulted to instant death from a severed spinal cord.

Francesca’s soulless body was found today around noon, and she was buried around 2:30pm in the premises of Grinnell College. During the funeral service, the few attendants spoke about her great intelligence and cuteness. Squirrel food was spread around the burial site for the ground squirrels still in life.

No charges will be filed against the two cats as they are protected under the Predator-Prey Act, signed by Nature.

Francesca, we will miss you.

This morning she managed to escape from her unlocked pet crate. The door was closed but not locked, and she somehow managed to open it. She had some diarrhea—to augment that, I added more powder to her milk solution, to make it thicker, while retaining the water. She was trying to crack a sunflower seed open, but all she managed to do is to perforate it.
